Learning About 3D Shapes

In numeracy, we have been learning about 3D shapes. Everyone got to make a 3D shape by getting a shape net of their choice, decorating it, cutting it, folding it and pasting it.

Square-Based Pyramid

Going On An Excursion!

                               Ocean Grove Nature Reserve

Yesterday, the grade fours had an excursion at the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve. On the way to the reserve I sat next to Emily and on the way to school I sat next to Mikayla. We got there by bus. Most people also bought there own camera or iPod with a camera to the excursion to take photos.

Tammy and Casey came from the Ballerat Watharong Corporation and showed us some ancient Aboriginal stuff like a man’s hunting stick, a lady’s stick, and many more things that Aboriginals used. They also talked about what they do at the corporation and Tammy and Casey explained how Aboriginals use these items. We got to pass some of the items around.
After Tammy and Casey showed us Aboriginal items, we went inside and had a look at some pictures, skulls of animals, birds nests and other things. The park ranger, Stuart, told us that us kids could have a look around the room for a couple of minutes. After we had a look around the room, Stuart told us interesting facts about the reserve and talked about how unhealthy it is with too many trees. There was a map behind him and he talked about that as well like how it was taken and how the land of the reserve is and stuff like that. Stuart also told us that he had had some burns in the reserve, on purpose because he wanted to get rid of some of the trees so that animals could get through. He also said that there were possums or wallabies or some type of animal was hiding up in the hedge of the roof and stuff.

When we got back outside, every grade four class got into three groups, with one adult. Once we got our groups all sorted, we went for a walk around the park, and we saw lots of plants, millions of trees and a few animals. The main animals in the park were wallabies, koalas, frogs, possums and birds, but you had to be quiet to see them. There were poisonous mushrooms, lots of trees, grass trees, animal poo, lot’s of mud on the ground, lakes and some pretty flowers. There were loads of annoying, biting mosquitoes. We heard frogs, but some groups didn’t see the frogs. The other animals we saw were a dead wallaby and a living wallaby hiding behind the trees.

Multiplication Array!

In class we were given multiplication arrays to work out and find the answer to. We made a slideshow on Google Docs and embed it in our blogs. We did not get the same arrays. My array is: 16x9 or 9x16. You can use multiplication or addition to work it out. Watch my slideshow to see how I worked it out and also to see what the answer is!

How would you work it out? Would you work it out the same as me, or different to me? What would you use to work it out? 😀 😀 😆

YCDI

At Leopold Primary School we are an YCDI (You Can Do It) school.

The values of YCDI are: GETTING ALONG is having great friendships, feeling for others and sharing with others. ORGANISATION is being tidy and listening and following instructions. CONFIDENCE is getting up and doing things, having great role models and being brave while encouraging others. PERSISTENCE / RESILIENCE are not being a sook, try and complete your goals and keep on trying.

In class we had to come up with examples for each one of these. Here are my examples:

GETTING ALONG – Last year at a camp on the holidays, I got along well with the people in my cabin and I got along well with two of my older buddies Dana and Marly and some other people and they helped me when I got home-sick. When I first came to this school I started to get along quite well with Mikayla and Emily and now we are best friends.

ORGANISATION – Practically every day I get ready for school like I get dressed and pack my bag. I also get organised to go out somewhere and to go to a friend’s house. I also got organised for a camp last year and since I had to fit a big sleeping bag in it took a while but I didn’t stop until I was done packing.

CONFIDENCE – I showed confidence while trying new things like doing a play or something like that. When I got stage fright at a dance concert, I still went on stage and I had to dance in front of a lot of people.

PERSISTENCE / RESILIENCE – I showed persistence/resilience when I didn’t know some fraction things and it was really hard but I just had a go. And I try to complete my goals.

Showing Grade 3’s Our Netbooks

On Tuesday (30/07), grade 4JL went into all the grade 3 classrooms to show them our netbooks. If you don’t know what a netbook is then it is a small laptop. We showed them:

The eduSTAR Bar has many fun, educational things like, literacy, maths, science, thinking, ICT, art, AV, office and tutorials.

If your school doesn’t use Ultranet, or you don’t know what it is, it is a educational site where your teachers sign you up for it and you can use it for literacy groups. Your teacher can also make a collaborative space with unlimited pages that you can add stuff to, comment on and look at. But to do ANYTHING, you have to log in.

At the end of us grade 4’s showing the grade 3’s our netbooks, Mr Lees let the grade 3 students ask questions about the netbooks. Some of the questions were:

Do you get to keep them? Yes, through grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and for the rest of your lives!

Can you take it home? Yes, once you have fully paid for it, but you can’t take it home in the first 3 or 4 weeks because you need to learn about the netbooks.

Can you download games on them? Yes, as long as they are appropriate for school and you aren’t playing the game in school time.

The grade 3’s and grade 4’s all enjoyed their day as there were lots of laughs while doing clay yourself and it was just fun.

Question Time!

Do you have a netbook or a laptop?

(For grade 4JL and grade 3’s) Did you enjoy the day?

Holiday Timetable

We did a list of what we did on the holidays in our writers notebook. Then we went onto Microsoft Excel and did a timetable of it. Here is my timetable:

Holiday Timetable

This is my holiday timetable. We did it in Microsoft Excel. It is pretty hard to use at first but you get used to it when you use it more. Of course I did other things?!

Have you used Microsoft Excel? 🙂

Semester Summary

In the first semester this year we have been learning new, fun and sometimes tricky things. All of us have our very own netbooks. I am in grade four and I have had an enjoyable and fun first semester. 🙂

At the start of the year (2013) we got our very own netbooks, but of course we had to pay for it! A few weeks later, we all got our own blogs. We have been learning on both netbook and paper, sometimes hard, sometimes easy.

Reading

In reading, my favourite things were:

  • Reading my own story and other peoples stories
  • Reading ‘The Bad Beginning’ by Lemony Snicket
  • Word of the day
  • Visualising while reading

Well of course we have been doing more ‘reading’ things than that. By doing ‘word of the day’, we had to read our book and find an interesting word.

Writing

In writing, my favourite things were,

  • Hand writing tests
  • Free writing
  • Blog writing
  • Monster description
  • Never ending ideas list

Everyone in my class has this book called ‘Writers Notebook’. It is where we have sections such as:

  • Visual Inspiration
  • Creative Seeds
  • Fabrication

We also made a front cover for our ‘Writers Notebook’.

Numeracy

In numeracy, my favourite things were:

  • Going on Mathletics
  • 10 things for $1000
  • Patterns and skip counting
  • Measuring our feet

We have done many more numeracy things. I also liked playing the numeracy games on the interactive whiteboard.

The first semester has been quite fun and the things we learnt were interesting and fun.

Word Parts

This week we have been looking at this strategy:

Use word parts to determine the meaning of words. (prefixes, suffixes, origins (where the words came from), abbreviations (ATM, jnr.), compound words (Some – one).

In class we have been reading a book called ‘The Bad Beginning’ by Lemony Snicket. We had to choose three words out of the lists that we had been collecting.

We had to choose one the was interesting, we had to choose one that had a lot of word parts and last of all choose one that you found meaning from the word parts.

From ‘The Bad Beginning’ we chose

Unsheathing was my most interesting word. Un (prefix) – sheath (put it back in its holder) – ing (suffix)

Uncontrollably word with the most word with most word parts. Un (opposite and prefix) control (base word) able (can)  – y (make it fit and suffix)

Hopelessness was the word we found meaning. Hope (base word) less (not as much) ness (makes it fit)

What is your best word you can find with word parts in your book? 🙂

Have you read this book and found these word parts? 🙂

Now I’ll tell you my word parts.

BecauseBe (prefix) Cause (base word)

Lunchtime – Lunchtime is a compound word. Lunch-time.

Flying – Fly (base word) ing (suffix)

The book that I was reading was ‘The Cuckoo Clock Of Doom’ by R.L. Stine.

Do you like my word parts? 😀
